Ljubljana, 16 October 2015 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, acting as the Managing Authority for European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, approved the project “Comprehensive regulation of the Park of Military History Pivka – Phase 2”. The project worth EUR 1.4 million will receive European Regional Development Fund support under the 2007-2013 programming period in the amount of approximately EUR 956 thousand.
Park of Military History Pivka is of great national importance and contributes to the preservation of military-historic and military-technical heritage as well as to the promotion of patriotism. The Park also supplements national tourist offer in the region Notranjsko-kraška. Park’s establishment as an important business entity will result in changing the mindset and the manner in which heritage related to military presence in this area is perceived. In the past the presence of military hindered the area’s development; protecting, presenting and promoting such heritage will thus turn this obstacle into an opportunity and one of the pillars of the area’s future economic development. A modern tourist museum centre is thus being established in Pivka which will bring numerous economic benefits.
Following the example of world’s modern technical and military museums Phase 2 of the project will, inter alia, cover regulating the vehicle segment of the museum collection. To illustrate driving an oldtimer and other exhibits the project covers setting up a platform which will also be used for other such museum events, for storing the relevant equipment and for a garage for tanks and driving exhibits. The footpath to the hill Primož will provide a well-arranged and attractive hiking trail going past Kote 100 which is where visitors can visit the renovated cave from World War I, and leading to the mighty fortresses of the Alpine Wall which was built by the Italians in the period between both world wars. This will round the overall additional offer of the Park of Military History.
The Park of Military History will thus become one of the largest military-tourist centres in Slovenia and also one of the most important military-historic centres in this part of Europe.
The project will give the region Notranjsko-kraška an important tourist attracting having great impact on the variety of its tourist offer. The project will also enhance the region’s visibility not only in Slovenia but also in the wider European area.
