Ljubljana, 13 August 2015 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, acting as the Managing Authority for European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a 2007-2013 grant award decision for the project “Renovation of the laboratory for bioprocesses at the Biotechnological Faculty of the University of Ljubljana”. The EUR 360,000 worth investment covering renovation of facilities and the purchase of new lab equipment will receive European Regional Development Fund support in the amount of a little under EUR 241,000.
The main objective of the investment in to provide the research infrastructure needed within the laboratory for industrial bioprocesses which will contribute to raising the level of quality in terms of research work. The project will contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of Slovenia with knowledge-based economy and enhanced research and development competences not only in terms of involvement in European projects but also in terms of providing support to Slovenian industry.
Improving research infrastructure will facilitate raising the level of research activity in the field of bioengineering, which is focused primarily on developing bioprocesses based on the newest methods. This will enhance the researchers’ international recognition within the international as well as European research environment. Improvements will also be made in terms of the quality of research activities as the students, who will have access to better opportunities in terms of practical research and development work and thus also in terms of enhancing their expertise and research competences, will have a better chance of finding employment in the most challenging working environments, namely within the industry as well as the academic sphere. The project will also enable establishing internationally comparable scientific and research conditions representing the foundation for innovation and technological progress in terms of the Slovenian knowledge. This will contribute to initiating positive changes in the field of knowledge transfer and cooperation with the economy which has been stagnating over the past few years due to the fact that certain facilities and equipment are outdated. Renovation of the laboratory will establish conditions for further strengthening and expanding cooperation with companies in the field of knowledge transfer as well as in terms of implementing common research-development projects.
