EU funds for the construction of noise barriers on five highway sections

Ljubljana, 30 November 2012 – The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology (MEDT), as the Managing Authority for the EU structural funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a decision granting EU funds for the construction of noise barriers on five highway sections, which are part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The project, which is worth over 61 million Euros, will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the amount of 41.9 million Euros.

Noise barriers and the so-called absorption linings of tunnel portals in the overall length of 31.2 kilometres or 140,646 m2 of surface will be constructed in the framework of the project, which is foreseen to be closed by the end of 2015.

Noise barriers will be constructed on the following highway sections:

  • Dramlje-Celje and Celje-Arja vas in the overall length of 18.3 kilometres
  • 1.5 kilometres on the section Malence-Šmarje Sap (including the absorption lining of the tunnel portal Mali vrh)
  • Unec-Postojna in the overall length of 3.8 kilometres
  • 7.6 kilometres on the highway section Brezovica-Vrhnika

With the construction of the noise barriers the noise emission in the area of the mentioned highway sections will be reduced which will improve the living environment for approximately 21,100 inhabitants.

The funds in the amount of 1.57 billion Euros in the framework of the Operational Programme for the Development of the Environmental and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2007–2013, in the framework of which the project is co-financed, are primarily meant for the modernisation or construction of new infrastructure in the field of environment and transport. The smaller share of these funds is also meant for the projects in the field of sustainable energy use.
