EU funds for the cycling connection Porečanka (Route of friendship and health)

Ljubljana, 29 November 2012 – The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology (MEDT), as the Managing Authority for the EU structural funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a decision granting EU funds for the construction of a section in the length of 435 metres on a 36 kilometres long cycling connection Porečanka – Route of friendship and health (Parenzana). The project, which is worth over 383,000 Euros, will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund in the amount of over 243,000 Euros.

The construction, which will be closed by the end of December 2014, will take place in two phases:

  • construction of a section of a cycling track in the length of 345 metres in Škofije
  • construction of a footbridge for cyclists and pedestrians over the old river branch of Dragonja in Mlini in the length of 90 metres

The newly-constructed section will be part of the distance cycling connection Porečanka (Parenzana), the greater part of which was already arranged in the past. In the future other sections will be constructed; these sections will be connected to the cycling connections in Italy and Croatia.

The realisation of the project, which is part of the Operational Programme for the Development of the Environmental and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2007–2013, will improve traffic safety of cyclists and the overall cycling network in Slovenia. The investment will also contribute to the development of tourism.
