EU funds for the project “Infrastructure of Metrology System – Amount of Substance/Food of Plant Origin/Olive Oil”

Ljubljana, 23 July 2012 – Ministry of Economic Development and Technology (MEDT), as the Managing Authority for the EU structural funds and the Cohesion Fund, directly approved the project “Infrastructure of Metrology System – Amount of Substance/Food of Plant Origin/Olive Oil”. The overall value of the project is 307,000 Euros. European Regional Development Fund contribution is 260,950 Euros.

The investment will enable purchasing two modern metrology machines – gas and liquid chromatographs. In accordance with the analysed needs in the Republic of Slovenia, which are implemented to ensure the traceability of the reference values for the field of the amount of substance/food of plant origin/olive oil, the findings showed an increased need to test olive oils. Due to the manner of making and savouring the oil has a special place among the edible oils. Due to its high price it is often transformed (it is for example mixed with regular oils). This is why the market normatives for olive oil are, in comparison to other oils, extremely high, while the verification is very demanding.

The equipment, which is the subject of the investment, will be used to assure measurement traceability in testing olive oils, especially for the needs of the Olive Oil Testing Laboratory, which operates in the framework of the University of Primorska. The equipment will ensure more accurate, reliable and faster testing and defining the quality of the olive oils.

The realisation of the project will modernise the development-research infrastructure in the Republic of Slovenia, assure the competitiveness at the global level and better implementation of tasks (accurate and reliable measurement) in the framework of the national metrology system.

The project, which will enable the realisation of the priority development objectives in accordance with the Resolution on the Strategic Guidelines for the Development of Slovenian Agriculture and Food Industry by 2020, contributes to the realisation of the objectives of the Operational Programme for Strengthening Regional Development Potentials for the period 2007–2013. Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia is responsible for the implementation of the project.
