Ljubljana, 17 June 2013 – The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, acting as the Managing Authority for the EU structural funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a decision awarding EU funds for the water supply project in Pomurje, namely for system A. The subject of the latter is water supply for seven municipalities in Pomurje – Črenšovci, Dobrovnik, Kobilje, Lendava, Odranci, Turnišče and Velika Polana. The project is part of the Operational Programme for the Development of the Environmental and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2007-2013; the Cohesion Fund contribution amounts to 26.1 million Euros.

With the realisation of the project, which is foreseen to be finished by October 2015, public drinking water supply will improve for about 23,700 inhabitant of the area. Besides the establishment of the main management centre in Lendava, the objective of the project is also the hydraulic improvement of over 124.8 kilometres of the pipeline and the additional construction of 24.2 of the pipeline, 17 pumping stations will be upgraded (14) or newly constructed (3), also 9 measuring or regulation shafts will be established. Also two water sources will be upgraded, namely Gaberje (from 65 litres per second to 99 litres per second) and Turnišče (from 30 litres per second to 45 litres per second).

The water supply networks in the individual municipalities will be connected into a concluded unit. After the realisation of the project the entire water supply system will exclude 11 inadequate water sources, namely Črenšovci, Žižki, Trnje, Dolnja Bistrica, Gornja Bistrica, Dobrovnik, Strehovci, Kobilje, Hotiza, Odranci and Velika Polana.

Besides the hydraulic improvement and connection of the municipal networks into a single water supply system as well as the more reliable supply of greater quality of the inhabitants with drinking water, water loss and disturbances in drinking water supply will also decrease. The project will also contribute to improving the health situation as well as the living conditions of the inhabitants of the area.

In the area of Pomurje water supply is insufficient with frequent problems of adequate water supply due to polluted water and, in some areas, the water supply system have not yet even been constructed. The main objective of the overall project Drinking water supply in Pomurje, which is divided into three systems: A, B and C, is to ensure a safe and permanent quality drinking water supply for the inhabitants. The mentioned systems are independent technically and financially concluded units.

System B represents a project of investing into the arrangement of water supply in the area of the Mura river left bank and includes 12 municipalities: Beltinci, Cankova, Gornji Petrovci, Grad, Moravske Toplice, Murska Sobota, Šalovci, Puconci, Kuzma, Hodoš, Rogašovci and Tišina.

The funds of the Operational Programme for the Development of the Environmental and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2007-2013, which is worth the 1.57 billion Euros, are primarily meant for the modernisation or construction of new infrastructure in the field of environment and transport. The smaller share of these funds is also meant for the projects in the field of sustainable energy use.
