Ljubljana, 10 June 2015 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, acting as the Managing Authority for European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, approved the project “New construction of the University Campus Livade Phase I: Building “A” (Purchase of research equipment – Mediterranean Cultures Centre)” which will raise the technological level of experimental research and educational work. The investment worth nearly EUR 1.9 million will receive European Regional Development Fund support in the amount of a little under EUR 1.6 million.
Purchasing new high-tech research equipment will establish the basic conditions for developing new technologies and establishing an even closer cooperation between the research sphere and users of knowledge which will further strengthen the transfer of knowledge from the academic sphere to the public, profit and non-profit sector, and enhance inter-disciplinary approach to research. In addition to improving the level of organisation and the quality of lab work, purchasing new equipment will also enable modernisation of the existing method of research as well as introduction of new methods. This will raise the level of quality of scientific-research achievements, improve the supportive environment for the economy and education, and thus contribute to enhancing the economy’s competitiveness.
With the new equipment, Building A, which is part of the University Campus Livada of the University of Primorska (Università del Litorale), will represent a unique infrastructure in the area of Južna Primorska. It is strategically located at the juncture of Slovenia, Italy and Croatia, having the potential to become the central and referential centre for biological and agronomic sciences in the northern part of the Adriatic area. The objective of the project is to contribute to biodiversity conservation in the cross-border area and improve environmental protection. The planned strategies envisage direct measures targeting biodiversity conservation as well as initiatives to reduce environmental impacts, in particular in the agricultural sector (in olive- and wine-growing).
The total active research equipment will bring together in a single place the research-development activities in the field of soil ecosystems and water sources, integrated protection of plans in the Mediterranean Area, organic and sustainable agriculture in the Mediterranean Area, biodiversity, cross-border networks for the protection of plants, meteorological data and networks for biodiversity and protected areas, joint use of research- and space-related capacities in the cross-border area and in the wider Mediterranean Area as well as education and training activities and the activities related to the transfer of scientific and technological knowledge.
