MEDT issued a decision awarding EU grants for the 3rd phase of the project for the discharge and treatment of wastewater in the Krka river basin

Ljubljana, 14 December 2012 – Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, as the Managing Authority for the EU structural funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a decision awarding EU fund for the 3rd phase of the project of the discharge and treatment of wastewater in the Krka river basin. The project, which is worth 25.6 million Euros, will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the amount of 14.8 million Euros.  

The 3rd phase of the project, which is part of the Operational Programme for Development of the Environmental and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2007–2013, will realise the discharge and treatment of municipal wastewater in the Krka river basin in the municipalities Grosuplje and Ivančna Gorica. In the framework of the project, which is foreseen to close in September 2015, 20.5 kilometres of sewage system, 10 pumping stations and 3 retention pools will be constructed. Also, the existing central wastewater treatment plant Grosuplje will be upgraded, namely, its capacity will increase from 10,000 to 20,000 population units and the central wastewater treatment plant Ivančna Gorica will be reconstructed. 

The realisation of the mentioned project means that 3,246 inhabitants will be additionally connected to the public sewage system, the quantity of harmful substances in the water will decrease and the quality of surface waters and living and health conditions will improve for the inhabitants of the mentioned municipalities.   

The overall project of discharge and treatment of wastewater in the Krka river basin in divided into three groups of projects, which are technically and financially independent as each project represents a technical unit of water discharge system in a specific municipality with connection to the wastewater treatment plant.   

The first two phases of the project will be financed by the Cohesion Fund; the decision on the co-financing was issued in September 2008 for the first phase and in October 2010 for the second phase. 

In the framework of the first phase, the value of which is estimated to over 18 million Euros, the construction of the wastewater treatment plant in Novo mesto and the improvement of the sewage system in foreseen. The project, which is foreseen to close by the end of 2015, will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the amount of 8.8 million Euros.  

The second phase, which is worth 11.4 million Euros, will realise the discharge and treatment of municipal wastewater in the Krka river basin in the municipalities Kočevje, Šentjernej and Ribnica. The realisation of the project, which is foreseen to close by mid 2014 and will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the amount of 6.5 million Euros, means that 20.3 kilometres of sewage system and 20 pumping stations will be constructed, as well as the existing wastewater treatment plant in Ribnica will be upgraded to 6,500 population units.
