Ljubljana, 11 August 2015 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, acting as the Managing Authority for European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, submitted to the European Commission the application to approve the major project for the construction of a motorway between Draženci and the international border crossing (IBC) Gruškovje. The project value is estimated at over EUR 246 million and will be implemented in the framework of the Operational Programme for the Implementation of the EU Cohesion Policy 2014-2020. The project is applying to receive Cohesion Fund support in the amount of EUR 63.5 million and is one of the first major projects of the 2014-2020 period submitted by the Member States to the European Commission. The application for the investment, which is of a wider European significance in terms of transport infrastructure, was prepared by the Motorway Company DARS d. d. in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The motorway Draženci – IBC Gruškovje will improve the quality of life and enhance traffic safety. The motorway will be a new route for long-distance and international transport which now runs on the road G1-9 Draženci-Jurovci-Gruškovje connecting two international border crossing Šentilj and Gruškovje. The new motorway will complete the overall motorway links with neighbouring countries and will represent one of the key links in the direction northwest – southeast. Removing bottlenecks is of key importance in dealing with traffic congestions which cause traffic jams in the wider region between Maribor and Ptuj, especially during the summer, and literally paralyse local inhabitants’ lives.
The project covers the construction of a motorway route in the length of 13.031 km, reconstruction of the motorway section Slivnica-Draženci, construction of a parallel regional road in the length of 13.899 km, construction of the deviations for categorized and uncategorized roads, construction of 3 slip roads (Lancova vas, Podlehnik and Zakl), construction of 7 overpasses, 3 underpasses, 2 underpasses for pedestrians, 9 motorway bridges, 15 bridges on deviations, 1 tunnel, 28 retaining walls, 3 supporting walls and 67 culverts. The project also covers the construction of a two-side motorway supply station Podlehnik, reconstruction of the plateau IBC Gruškovje, establishment of water drainage, water management, relocation or protection of affected lines of public service infrastructure, provision of transport equipment and signalisation, landscaping and planting, construction of a noise barrier in the length of 8.415 km, demolishment of facilities and the costs pertaining to rearrangements of transportation during construction.
Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of August 2015 and conclude by June 2018. Construction will be carried out in two stages. In July 2015 the beneficiary DARS d. d. signed a contract with the company SGP Pomgrad d. d. to implement the first stage, namely the construction of over 7 km of motorway. A works contract for the second stage, namely the construction of the motorway Draženci – IBC Gruškovje, is already open.
