Ljubljana, 26 November 2019 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, the Managing Authority for European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, has issued a grant decision for the call for proposals Development of the Slovenian language in a digital environment – language sources and technologies to be published on Friday. EUR 4 million will be made available under the call for proposals. European Regional Development Fund contribution stands at EUR 3.2 million.
The call for proposals which is to be published by the Ministry of Culture will co-finance a research and development project for the development of language sources and technologies, consisting of several sets:
- maintenance and upgrading of corpora
- speech technologies
- sematic sources and technologies
- machine translation
- terminology portal
- maintenance of the infrastructure centre for language sources and technologies.
The proposed sets address the need to develop computer products and services that are currently missing in the field of language technologies available to research organisations, companies and the general public. The call for proposals aims to bring together the science and economic sector in developing user-friendly end products that would help people overcome the language barriers in communication, cooperation, doing business, exchange of knowledge and participation in social and political debates. The developed products and open access to the research results will pave the way to upgrading organised storage, maintenance and distribution of sources and technologies, which will, in turn, establish a more just cooperation with European initiatives for digital sources and tools exchange. This will make the Slovenian research and development sector more competitive in international standards.
Universities, research organisations and enterprises, formed into a consortium, may apply. One consortium will be selected within the call for proposals.
