Ljubljana, 22 April 2021 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has approved EU funding for the project “Improving the level of species and habitat types preservation in the Nature Park Pivka Intermittent Lakes PIVKA.KRAS.PRESIHA”. The project worth over EUR 3 million will receive almost EUR 2.4 million of European Regional Development Fund support.
The project will enable implementing activities that will improve the status of a large number of plant and animal species, and at the same time enable tourists to visit the Pivka Intermittent Lakes in a sustainable manner for many years to come.
The project primarily focuses on improving the condition of intermittent lakes, eastern sub-Mediterranean dry grasslands and six qualifying species within Natura 2000, namely scarce large blue, marsh fritillary, woodlark, barred warbler, Italian crested newt and lesser horseshoe bat. The project will also have a positive impact on other species and habitat types within the cultural landscape.
With the project Municipality Pivka, Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies of University of Primorska, Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia – Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Nova Gorica aim to raise locals’ awareness of the importance and values of their heritage and strengthen local identity.
