Ljubljana, 31 August 2018 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, the Managing Authority for ERDF, ESF and Cohesion Fund, issued a grant decision for a project aiming at improving the town centre of Novo mesto. The investment, which totals over EUR 7 million, will receive a contribution from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) standing at a little under EUR 3.7 million.
The Urban Municipality Novo mesto plans to revitalise the town centre, i.e. main square, through an EU-funded project whose main goal is to address the signs of social, physical and economic deterioration of the inner city area. The municipality seeks to make the area more attractive and vibrant to live in, especially for younger generations, which should, in turn, drive the shift in the age structure of the town’s population.
This redevelopment project involves physical renovation of the targeted public space by upgrading urban furniture, changing the traffic regime by developing pedestrians-only zones, and making arrangements for moving traffic, cycling and parking areas, while providing the necessary delivery and intervention areas for catering, market and events-related activities. The economic infrastructure will also be revamped.
The project is expected to support the creation of an attractive high-quality down-town residential area that will facilitate and support the expansion of an array of services delivered in this part of the town, which will attract more visitors and tourists and reverse the trend of shops and catering facilities getting closed in the inner city area.
