After its renovation, the Novo mesto Main Square is now primarily intended for use by pedestrians and cyclists which is why the Urban Municipality Novo mesto wanted to provide proper access to the city centre. One of the most important accesses to the city centre is via the Kandija Bridge standing at the lower part of the Main Square. With innovative approaches in the field of traffic arrangements, an experimental traffic arrangement was set up on the bridge based on the principle of a joint traffic area, thus giving greater emphasis to areas intended for pedestrians and cyclists.
The aim of setting up such traffic arrangement of Kandija Bridge is to limit the use of cars in the city centre, promote walking and using bicycles for everyday errands in the city centre, change the travel habits of residents, contribute to a better and friendlier stay in the city and reduce air pollution with CO2 and PM10 particles.
Setting up appropriate infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists in Novo mesto contributes to sustainable mobility development, which also entails other planned projects for setting up infrastructure for pedestrians and cycling routes as well as promoting forms of mobility that decrease environmental burdens and encourage healthy lifestyle habits.
