The Urban Municipality of Ptuj implemented an extensive ITI-funded redevelopment project to repurpose the old town cemetery that had not been used for several decades, and decided to transform it into a memorial park. The redevelopment project particularly focused on the placement of the planned structures and infrastructure on the cemetery site allowing for the new site layout to preserve as many cultural and natural heritage elements as possible. In fact, it was the conservation of the rich cultural heritage of the town of Ptuj that the project was all about. By revitalizing the degraded public space and repurposing it, the project also offers long-term improvements to the economic, physical, social and environmental aspects of the area, raises awareness of the population about the importance of cultural heritage, and diversifies tourist offer of the town. The repurposed area has become an attractive venue accommodating a variety of cultural events and educational activities and serves as open green space that has improved the quality of life of the town residents and made the town more attractive.
