Ljubljana, 26 November 2019 - Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, Managing Authority for EU Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, has issued a grant award decision for the project ITI Revitalisation of the old town square in the centre of Velenje. The investment worth over EUR 2.9 million will receive over EUR 1.2 million of European Regional Development Fund support under the Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) mechanism.
The purpose of the project is the urban revitalisation of part of the town in the settlement Staro Velenje, which is overlooked and abandoned and has untapped potential. The building called Stara pekarna (the old bakery) is completely rundown and unsuitable for rehabilitation, and – in terms of urban planning – does not belong in the old town centre; which is why it is planned for demolition. In accordance with the guidelines of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, a new replacement facility will be built, along with the associated areas. The new facility will house several studios, a creative workshop, exhibition spaces, a shared space for co-work of artists, a small restaurant on the ground floor, and two apartments.
