After four years FIS Cross-Country World Cup competition returned to Slovenia. On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 January 2016, the new Planica Nordic Centre hosted sprints for ladies and men. In Planica, which is otherwise best known for the ski jumping and flying centre, works on the modern cross-country stadium and tracks were completed in December 2015. The centre and the stadium are part of the project Planica Nordic Centre, which is worth nearly EUR 45 million with the majority of funding coming from European Regional Development Fund and to a certain extent from the budget of the Republic of Slovenia. The new centre established ideal conditions for training and competition not only for top sports athletes and recreational athletes but also for children and youth who like to engage in sports activities. The project and EU funds support help Slovenia continue the tradition of hosting events in Planica, and establish bases for an extended tourist offer in Kranjska Gora, the Upper Sava Valley and Slovenia as a green, active and healthy tourist destination.
